Parenting teenagers and young people can be a difficult experience for many. All adolescents will have moments of resistance, anger and struggle to make good choices. Parents often receive confusing advice from different well-meaning sources about their parenting. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a sounding board to help guide and navigate through the typical ups and downs of parenting a teenager.
With over 25 years’ experience with adolescents, both as a psychotherapist and a high school educator, I work with parents to find the “next best steps” to many situations that arise with their son/daughter. I understand the different school, home and friend environments adolescents find themselves in, and know how to help make sense of them. These parenting sessions are focused to offer guidance and practical solutions to universal issues that come up in daily life with your son/daughter. My goal is to help parents develop new ideas that lead to options of how best to proceed.
Some common issues that arise in these sessions are:
- Navigating school related issues and performance
- Trouble talking to teens about sensitive and difficult topics
- Setting realistic boundaries and discipline when things don’t go well
- How separation and divorce impacts teenagers and how to deal with it
- Creating realistic structures and limits around screens and social media
- Assessing “normal” teenage moodiness versus clinical depression/anxiety
- Addressing drug/alcohol usage in the adolescent years
- How to best stay connected to your son/daughter during this fraught time
Sometimes these sessions reveal that psychotherapy either for the young person, the couple, or the family is indicated. When that is the case, I help you find the right therapist for your situation.
